9 Best Foods for Your Skin

From mangoes to mussels, try these nine choices to protect against sunburn or ease wrinkles

You are what you eat? Maybe not, but you do look the way you eat. Putting your best face forward starts with putting the right ingredients in your mouth. "The same foods that are good for your health are good for your skin," says Valori Treloar, a dermatologist based in Newton, Mass. "Your skin is just the outside part of your body."
Want a healthy, glowing complexion? Load up on nutritious meals and snacks, like sweet potatoes, mangoes, and canned tuna. Experts say these foods will do as much for your appearance as your inner health. Here are nine skin-boosting choices:

Tomatoes
They're full of lycopene, a phytochemical that provides red pigment and health benefits. Lycopene helps eliminate skin-aging free radicals caused by ultraviolet rays—in other words, protecting against sun damage. To reap the most benefits, heat them up: A half-cup of cooked tomatoes, for example, packs 16 milligrams of lycopene. A daily dose coupled with sunscreen will help block the burn.

Mangoes, papaya, and apricots
Got that washed-out look? Load up on some fruit. Mangoes, papaya, and apricots are full of pigments called carotenoids, which are stored in the layer of fat directly beneath the skin and can improve color. "They peek through, giving you a rosy glow," says registered dietitian Karen Ansel, a spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and co-author of The Calendar Diet: A Month by Month Guide to Losing Weight While Living Your Life.

Cocoa powder
Flavonals, the antioxidants in dark chocolate, reduce roughness in the skin and protect against sun damage. A study published in 2006 in the Journal of Nutrition found that women who drank cocoa fortified with 326 milligrams of flavonals a day had better skin texture and stronger resistance to UV rays than those who didn't get as much of the antioxidants. Just a few ounces a day—or a standard Hershey's Dark Chocolate bar—is sufficient. Another tasty way to get enough? Spoon some cocoa powder into your morning coffee, Ansel suggests.

Flaxseeds
Think of these as tiny wrinkle fighters. They're packed with omega-3 fatty acids, which erase spots and smooth fine lines. In one study, participants who had about half a teaspoon of omega-3s daily for six weeks had less skin irritation and redness, as well as better-hydrated skin, according to findings published in 2009 in the British Journal of Nutrition. That's likely because fatty acids attract water to skin cells, plumping the skin and reducing wrinkling.

Sweet potatoes
They're full of vitamin C, which smoothes wrinkles by stimulating the production of collagen. One study, published in 2007 in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, found that people who consumed 4 milligrams of C—about half a small sweet potato—daily for three years reduced the appearance of wrinkles by 11 percent.

Mussels
If you're not getting enough iron, your skin will turn pale and pasty, Ansel says. The solution? Iron-rich choices like mussels. One 3-ounce serving delivers a third of the daily recommended amount.

Spinach
Want to protect yourself against skin cancer? Take a page out of Popeye's book. A study published in the International Journal of Cancer found that folks who ate the most spinach developed half as many skin tumors over 11 years as those who ate the smallest amount. That's likely because the folate in spinach helps maintain and repair DNA, reducing the likelihood of cancer-cell growth.

Canned tuna
It's packed with selenium—a nutrient that preserves elastin, which keeps skin smooth and tight. Selenium also prevents free radicals that are produced by UV rays from damaging skin cells, protecting against sun damage.

Safflower Oil
If you have dry, flaky, or itchy skin, take note: This common cooking oil doubles as a moisturizer. It contains omega-6 fatty acids, which keep cell walls supple, allowing water to reach the skin. Some research suggests consuming safflower oil can help ease sin disorders like dermatitis, inflammation, acne, and dry skin.

Kiwi Fruit For Skin Care

Kiwis are natives of the China's Yangzte River Valley, but today, they are commercially grown worldwide. The fuzzy brown-skinned fruit with the tasty green center is loaded with nutritional benefits that rival those of many other fruits. Whether you eat them or wear them, kiwis contain vitamins and other nutrients that contribute to healthy, glowing skin. When choosing a topical cream or gel that contains kiwi or kiwi extract, keep in mind that research into topical applications of kiwi is ongoing.

Firm Skin

Kiwis contain large amounts of the water-soluble vitamin C, which is needed to produce collagen. Collagen is a connective protein that helps to firm your skin. Production of collagen decreases with aging, causing skin to lose elasticity. Collagen-stimulating ingredients, like kiwi extract, may be added to skin care products to slow the appearance of aging.

Soft Skin

Vitamin C not only firms skin, it repairs it. Kiwis have more vitamin C than a comparable amount of oranges. Vitamin C helps cuts and abrasions to heal and it also works to prevent rough, dry skin. In addition to skin care products that contain kiwi extract, go for the internal vitamin C boost with a fresh salad of kiwi, strawberries and citrus slices to help protect skin from the inside out.

Smoother Skin

Kiwis are a good source of vitamin E. The University of Maryland Medical Center says that topical vitamin E may decrease facial lines and the depth of wrinkles. Studies of vitamin E as an external application are inconclusive but ongoing. Vitamin E has been shown to reduce UV-induced skin cancer in animal testing. Remember that cosmetics are not as strictly regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration as products that are classified as drugs. Sunblock does offer you protection from harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. Wrinkle cream may or may not erase those frown lines.

Younger Skin

You can't turn the clock back but you may be able to slow it down. Kiwis are a major source of antioxidants that can delay the effects of aging throughout the body. Antioxidants neutralize the free radicals that can damage healthy cells and hasten the process of degeneration, including changes in skin thickness, elasticity and firmness. Mayo Clinic doctors recommend getting your antioxidants from food sources, like kiwis, that have a complex mix of vitamins C, E, lycopene and other substances that fight free radicals.

• Vitamin C, contained in mangoes, boosts in the production of collagen which in turn, imparts a healthy looking skin. Thus, using it in face packs and in diet is beneficial.
• Mango juice has revitalizing effect that eats away the dullness your skin suffers from in the hot and humid weather.
• Lastly, mangoes are available in plenty in Indian markets (especially in the eastern regions). They are pretty cheap as seasonal fruits and very appetizing too. So, when you have mangoes coming in your house to fill your fruit basket in the summers, why should you not take the fair chance to treat your skin as well?

Salt Benefits for Skin (Sea Salt & Himalayan Salt)

BENEFITS OF SEA SALT FOR THE SKIN

Sea salt is growing in popularity not just on the dining room table, but in skin products as well. It can be found in a variety of different forms to be used in bath salts, soaps and exfoliating scrubs. Sea salt is made by taking water from either oceans or saline lakes and letting the water evaporate to leave the salts behind, whereas table salt is mined from salt deposits in the earth and heavily processed to produce "clean" salt.

Exfoliate
Sea salt on its own is an excellent exfoliating treatment, and according to CareFair.com is found as a primary ingredient in many high-end spa treatments. In a June 2010 article in the "San Jose Mercury News," Lisa Price, founder of Carol's Daughter, a natural beauty product retailer, recommends paying attention to the grade of sea salt used to exfoliate. Sea salt used to rub into the skin shouldn't have rough, sharp edges. The texture of the sea salt should be smooth to the touch, as you want it to gently slough off the dead skin cells, not scratch the skin. It can also be used as a rub to exfoliate and soften tough skin.

Stress Reducer
Greeks and Romans both used warm seawater as a therapy to help people relax. This is now called talassotherapy, a word derived from the old Greek word thalassa that means sea. According to Health-Benefit-of-Water.com, sea salt bath therapy provides psychological benefits and improves quality of sleep.

Detoxifier
Sea salt is a natural detoxifier, as the salt absorbs the toxins from the skin. Make a paste out of sea salt and water, apply it to your skin and leave it on for one minute before you get into the shower. Massage the salt off gently in the shower as you bathe. This will not only help detoxify your skin, but will help exfoliate dead skin cells as you rinse it off.

Additional Benefits
Increased circulation, antiseptic effects, soft skin without a greasy feel and reduction in fluid retention are just some of the additional benefits of sea salt for the skin. Since sea salt does not go through the same manufacturing processes as table salt, the minerals from the sea remain, giving sea salts different colorings depending on where they are from. Many of these minerals also provide nutrients and benefits to the skin.

Sea salt contains skin nourishing minerals such as magnesium, zinc, calcium, potassium and iodine.  Some of the many benefits include:
- relaxes skin muscles
- cleanses and detoxifies face and body
- sea salts draw toxins out of the body, which will naturally lead to feeling refreshed
- grainy and therefore makes for a great scrub
- increases blood circulation

Himalayan Salt

Before the advent of modern-day medicine, people used salts for centuries to heal themselves. Himalayan salt is a pink salt that can be found in the Himalayan Mountains. Dr. Janet Star, alternative health and nutrition expert, states that biophysical research on this pink salt has identified crystals that contain the 84 essential minerals required to sustain human life. Because of this, Himalayan salt can be a natural and chemical-free alternative to traditional table salt. Himalayan salt has no additives and can alleviate the symptoms of a variety of conditions.

Dental Hygiene
Himalayan salt can be used to maintain good oral hygiene. Add some of the salt to water, and let the crystals dissolve. Then use it for a good gargle to stop halitosis. If you have sore and bleeding gums, gargling three to four times a day with a Himalayan salt and water solution can help. An infected tooth can be painful and make your entire body hurt. Using Himalayan salt with water and swishing it around the sore tooth can help draw out the pathogens and kill bacteria and germs.

Acne
Himalayan salt aids in certain disorders of the skin such as acne. It works by drawing out toxins. The toxins that are in the body as well as under the skin can be one of the causes of skin disorders such as acne. Himalayan salt can be purchased in the form of a bar and can be used to wash the face. It can also be dissolved in water and used as a face wash. There are also recipes available online and at health food stores for making facial scrubs that can also assist in the treatment of acne.

A Study of Health and Himalayan Salt
A study conducted at the University of Graz in Austria found that people who drank water containing Himalayan crystal salt daily experienced improvement in respiratory conditions, organ functions, and connective tissues. Participants also reported sleeping better and having more energy. The study noted a boost in the ability to achieve higher concentration levels. Some of the study participants stated they lost unwanted weight while others involved in the study showed enhanced hair and nail growth.

Himalayan Salt Sole (Solay) Health Benefits
Many conditions can be treated with a mixture called sole. Sole can be made by placing several crystal salt stones in a 12-ounce jar with a wooden or plastic lid, adding 12 to 16 oz. of water, and letting it sit for 24 hours, or until the crystals have dissolved. Drinking 2 to 3 tbsp. daily can help prevent colds and flu and aid in weight loss. It can be rubbed on cuts and scrapes to help in healing. Adding a half cup to a bath soak can help with arthritic pain. A teaspoon of sole in a nettle pot can facilitate healing of sinuses.

Avocado Benefit for Your Skin

AVOCADO FOR SKIN CARE

Avocados have a long and rich history dating back to the Aztec civilization. The fruit is known to improve heart health, aid in weight loss, provide a good course of vitamins B, C and E and is safe to use in baby food and in a diabetic diet. Besides all of the internal benefits, avocados have received a well-earned reputation for keeping skin looking young, beautiful and moist. Centuries after their first discovery, avocados are making a a cosmetic comeback to fight aging and dry and acne prone skin.

History
The word for avocado comes from the Spanish word "aguacate" which comes from the Aztec word "ahuacatl." Agri Business Week reported in 2009 that the word "ahuacatl" translates to "testicle," probably a reference to the way the fruit hangs from the tree, and that for centuries the fruit was associated with being an aphrodisiac. Because of its sexual reputation, avocado purchases were nearly non-existent in the western world where buying one might lead to slanderous assaults. Despite the rumor, countries around the world have been using avocados in ice cream, milk shakes, as a side dish, as a dip, in soups, in salads and as an ingredient in face masks for optimal skin health.

Skin Benefits
According to Avocado.com, avocados reduce the appearance of age spots, help reduce signs of skin aging and heals dry skin and eczema. Large amounts of sterolins, a protein proven to reduce the appearance of age spots, scars and sun damage, are found in avocados. Avocado oil contains the highest amount of sterolins in the fruit, states Avocado.com, making it an ideal ingredient in skin moisturizers marketed to people with dry or damaged skin. Avocado oil also increases the amount of collagen found in the skin. Avocado.com reports that a loss of collagen in the skin occurs in the natural aging process and avocado oil helps to slow that process down. Avocados do not clog pores.

Potential
Cosmetic companies taking an interest in creating biodegradable make-up are turning to avocados as a replacement for chemicals, says Bob Bergh, author of "The Avocado and Human Nutrition." The avocado is being used to make skin moisturizer, lipstick, hair conditioner, bath oil, make-up base and even sunscreen for many cosmetic brands. In fact, Bergh states that studies have proven that avocado oil is the most effective type of sunscreen. According to his 1992 research, avocado is rare in its ability to both be absorbed quickly by the skin and to sooth and calm the skin.

Recipes
Agri Business Week offers an avocado face mask to cure dry skin that includes mixing a 1/4 cup each of avocado puree and sour cream then gently applying the mask to your face and neck while avoiding sensitive areas like the eyes (see reference 1). Agri Business Week recommends letting the mask sit for up to 15 minutes and then removing with warm water and a wash cloth (see reference 1). For a quicker dry skin remedy, Agri Business Week reports that you can rub the inside of the avocado skins against clean skin.

Aloe Vera Skin Benefits

ALOE VERA & SKIN BENEFITS

Aloe vera has been a staple in the medicine cabinet since the ancient Egyptians dubbed it the “plant of immortality” and offered it as a burial gift to deceased pharaohs. Since then, its uses have become more targeted and medicinal, and it is one of the leading therapies for sunburns.

About Aloe Vera
Aloe vera comes from the aloe plant, a succulent native to Africa that has been used medicinally for centuries. Aloe leaves ooze a clear gel when broken off from the rest of the plant that can be applied topically to heal wounds and soothe skin, according to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine. The green part of the leaf that surrounds the gel can be used to produce a laxative juice called aloe latex, according to the NCCAM. Aloe plants are sub-tropical and can grow indoors or outdoors as long as they receive plenty of sunshine and have no chance of freezing.

Aloe Vera for Burns
Aloe vera is primarily used to soothe blistered, sunburned skin, according to Aloe-Vera-Studies.org. It has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, and it supports skin cell regeneration. Aloe vera also contains active compounds that may decrease pain, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center, and for this reason provides a cooling, refreshing feeling when applied to skin. Because aloe vera is largely made up of water, it evaporates quickly and can be re-applied as frequently as desired.

Aloe Vera for Skin Conditions
Aloe vera contains 19 of the 20 amino acids required by the body for good health, according to AloeVeraBenefits.com, and for this reason it is a powerful healing agent. In addition to treating burned skin, aloe is useful in moisturizing dry, flaky skin. It has also shown some promise in treating more serious and persistent conditions such as genital herpes, dandruff, psoriasis, canker sores, skin ulcers and others, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Using Aloe Vera
Aloe vera comes in a variety of forms and can be purchased at almost any drug store. Pure aloe vera can be purchased as a gel, juice or powder, and should be gently rubbed into the skin as frequently as needed. It is also frequently added to products such as lotions, shampoos and cosmetics. Aloe plants can be grown at home and the gel can be extracted from the leaves and applied directly to the skin. Aloe plants can be purchased at almost any plant nursery.

Activated Charcoal

Charcoal and soap---two words that don't seem to go together. Yet in recent years, activated charcoal---a specially processed form of carbon---has increasingly been used in natural soaps and cleansers. Charcoal, it's said, draws impurities and toxins out of the skin, helping to relieve acne and other skin problems. Is it effective? Possibly. Is it harmful? Almost certainly not. You'll need to experiment to see if charcoal soap can alleviate your acne, but you can do so confidently: Charcoal is proven to do no harm to humans.

History
Charcoal has been used medicinally for millennia. Ancient Egyptians are believed to have used it as a poultice to keep wounds clean; Hindu documents from 450 B.C. discuss charcoal for water filtration. In the 18th century, charcoal was studied by chemists and pharmacists, who were interested in its ability to protect the human body from toxins. Activated carbon is still used today in water filters and as a poison antidote.

How It Works
Activated charcoal has high adsorptive powers, which means that it draws other elements into itself. Charcoal is activated through heat and exposure to steam and certain chemicals. This process causes the carbon to form enlarged "pores," which are fissures and pockets in its surface. When it is exposed to contaminants, they literally become trapped in the carbon's pores. Charcoal also has antibacterial properties that can help heal wounds. Activated carbon is used for everything from industrial water filtration to medicinal supplements.

Charcoal and Your Skin
Your skin is a living organ, which has pores of its own. These pores, and the skin's permeable membrane, allow chemicals and toxins to pass both into and out of your body. Acne has many possible causes, including blocked pores; dirt and bacteria on the skin's surface; excess sebum, or oil; and poor diet. Applying activated charcoal to your skin, it's claimed, will remove detritus from your skin's surface and can even extract toxins from beneath the skin, according to Health 911. The antibacterial properties of charcoal can also help alleviate infections, or keep them from happening.

Misconceptions
Although there are potential benefits to using charcoal soap, it has not been proven to have a significant effect on serious acne. In fact, the claims of its skin-clearing powers might be exaggerated. Very little research is available to demonstrate charcoal's cleansing effects on the skin, and the amount of charcoal used in a soap product might be insignificant. It might do you more good to take carbon supplements than to rub it on your face: ingesting activated charcoal can address your body's toxicity through your digestive system, giving toxins no chance to make it to your skin. Also, charcoal does not absorb oil or sebum, a primary cause of teenage acne.

Acne Control with Charcoal Soap
Activated charcoal will not harm your skin, which makes it a good addition to your cleansing routine. If you suffer from dry skin, use charcoal soap to replace harsher cleansers. For adults with mild acne, a charcoal cleanser can help prevent outbreaks. However, don't expect charcoal soap to magically solve your skin problems. Instead, eat healthier, clean and moisturize your skin regularly, and use proven acne-fighting agents such as benzoyl peroxide to clear up tougher outbreaks.

Castile vs Bastile Soap

Be a smart buyer ;)

Artikel mengenai rice bran powder:

Rice bran is a powerhouse. The layer between the inner white rice grain and the outer hull, rice bran accounts for a whopping 60% of the nutrients found in each rice kernel. A super food, rice bran packs in over 100 anti-oxidants and nutrients which help achieve smooth, radiant and youthful looking skin. Used for many centuries, rice bran powder is said to prevent wrinkles, heal blemishes, absorb dirt and oil from pores, and balance the natural oils in the skin. No wonder Nuka Bijin, meaning rice bran beauty, is one of the highest compliments a Japanese woman can be paid.

Found in our Brand New Day Microderma Scrub and Masque, rice bran powder contains over 100 anti-oxidants. Antioxidants deactivate and neutralize free radicals that can cause premature aging. Always a good thing. One of the most potent of these antioxidants is a newly discovered complex of vitamin-E (found only in rice bran, barley and palm oil). This complex is 40-60 times more potent than regular vitamin E. Topically applied vitamin E helps to reduce inflammation, hydrate, rejuvenate, soften, and soothe the skin while battling the effects of aging, minimizing free radicals and reducing the incidence of scarring. As an added bonus, rice bran powder also contains lipoic acid, known as the “universal antioxidant” which helps to protect the skin’s cellular structure by deactivating the damage caused by free radicals as well as boosting the activity of all other antioxidants. Amazing.

And then there is the full amino acid profile found in rice bran powder. Amino acids, the building blocks of life, are essential for healthy, vibrant, and supple skin. And did we mention rice bran powder is also a rich source of fiber?  Fiber helps to pull surface dirt from the pores into the structure of the powder, leaving skin gently cleansed. And last but not least, rice bran powder contains the moisturizing essential fatty acids, Omega 3 and Omega 6. These essential fatty acids help to promote cell renewal and regeneration while nourishing and conditioning the skin.

Benefits of Oatmeal in Soap

What Are the Benefits of Oatmeal in Soap?

Anyone who has had chicken pox, poison ivy, a bug bite or even very dry skin knows that the urge to scratch can often be worse than the itch itself. In colloidal form, oatmeal can help to alleviate the itch and its accompanying swelling as well as the desire to scratch. Does this Spark an idea?

Facts

  • Colloidal oatmeal (Genus Species name, Avena sativa L) is finely ground oatmeal. Oatmeal and its natural oil coat, moisturize, protect and gently cleanse, while correcting the pH of itchy or inflamed skin back to normal. When added to baths, colloidal oatmeal soap doesn't clump; it spreads out and melts into a cloudy treatment that can relieve skin irritations. Colloidal oatmeal is not a food product and should not be ingested; do not apply to eyes.

Function

  • Colloidal oatmeal's scientific qualities are due to its many natural chemicals. Saponins (a form of natural detergent) comprise its cleaning ability. It also has a high level of starch and beta-glucan (a polysaccharide with inhibiting abilities), which is primarily responsible for its moisture-retentive properties. Colloidal oatmeal also contains phenols (a form of antiseptic), which encompass its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and ultraviolet absorbing properties. It can also be used as a gentle exfoliating agent. These healing qualities can all be transmitted to skin via soap.

Benefits

  • Colloidal oatmeal suppresses the "need to scratch," which is especially useful for use on irritated, dry skin. Conditions include insect bites; acne; eczema; psoriasis; sunburn; sores; chicken pox; poison ivy, oak or sumac; shingles; prickly heat; and other itching, tingly rashes. Bathe in lukewarm water, since hot water will dry the skin out further, or apply colloidal oatmeal as a moisturizer in lotion form. It is also available in other soap-like styles such as shampoos and shaving gels.

Studies

  • In his study "Treatment of Rosacea with Herbal Ingredients," Dr. Wu suggests that colloidal oatmeal would be an effective cleanser for rosacea. The avenacins in colloidal oatmeal provide an antifungal, soap-like quality. Colloidal oatmeal's moisturizing properties enhance skin's barrier function, which tends to be impaired in patients with rosacea (a chronic disease comprising facial redness, bumpiness and broken blood vessels). Its anti-inflammatory qualities could be used to reduce rosacea's accompanying redness.

  • Make your own oatmeal soap for soothing or exfoliating purposes by grinding oatmeal with a coffee grinder or food processor and adding it to various melt-and-pour style soap bases (available in craft stores), then into molds. Leave the oatmeal flakes larger for an exfoliating bar; for a smoother soap, grind the oatmeal finer. Add other ingredients to calm the skin (like powdered goat's milk) to boost the soap's soothing qualities.

Skincare Benefits of Honey

From moisturiser to antiseptic, honey has a wide range of uses for your skin.

Honey is considered to be one of the greatest gifts that nature has bestowed on man. It is not only healthy when consumed, but also very beneficial to your skin. Its beauty and medicinal benefits have been known to humankind for centuries. There are stories that Cleopatra used to bathe herself in milk and honey and Poppea, the wife of Nero, used honey and milk as a facial lotion. Today, honey is used as an important skincare ingredient by cosmetic companies in order to help with different skin conditions.
Honey is basically nectar obtained from the flowers. It is 80 percent sugar; the rest is minerals and trace elements such as iron, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium and amino acids. It also contains vitamins C, B and water. Bees have inhabited our planet for around 150 million years making honey for us. As a result the Greeks, Persians, Egyptians and even the Romans knew about the skincare benefits of honey. Here are a few to get you started:

1. An effective moisturiser
Honey has humectant qualities; as a result, it can be used as a moisturiser in many cosmetic preparations. It not only attracts water but also retains it in the skin, so the skin remains supple and elastic. It also protects against wrinkles and dryness.

2. Antiseptic properties
Honey has antibacterial and antimicrobial properties which give it healing power. These properties help prevent the growth of certain bacteria by producing an enzyme -- hydrogen peroxide. Thus, honey can be utilised as a natural treatment for wounds, cuts and abrasions to promote healing.

3. A cure for eczema
The most important benefit of a special type of honey, called manuka honey, is that it can cure eczema. It can treat damaged skin and regenerate new skin cells and hence it is a vital ingredient in almost all products that are manufactured to cure eczema and other forms of dermatitis.

4. Treatment of infection
A common skin infection -- ringworm -- can also be treated using manuka honey. It possesses anti-fungal properties that can cure the infection. Other fungal infections like athlete's foot and jock itch can be healed by applying manuka honey too.

5. Anti-aging properties
Honey has always been famous for its natural antioxidant properties, which play an important role in protecting the skin from ultraviolet damage. Overexposure to the sun causes skin damage, premature aging and even skin cancer. Honey can be used as a sunscreen to protect the skin from the sun.

6. Anti-acne properties
As honey can fight infections below the skin's top layer by unclogging pores and drawing out impurities, it can help you deal with acne problems. The active properties of honey penetrate the blocked follicle, killing the bacteria which cause acne and any infection.

7. Skin conditioning properties
Mix one teaspoon of honey with one teaspoon vegetable oil and one-fourth teaspoon lemon juice. This mixture is a very natural conditioner, to be rubbed onto every part of your body which is suffering from dry skin. Leave it on for 10 minutes and then rinse off.

8. Skin toning properties
Make a concoction of one tablespoon honey and a peeled, de-seeded apple. Apply this paste onto your face for 15 minutes. Rinse with cool water. This tones the skin, keeping it firm.

9. Lip protection
The application of honey on chapped and wrinkled lips will make them wonderfully smoother and softer.

10. Exfoliation
Honey can be used to make a gentle exfoliator. Mix one tablespoon each of finely grounded almonds and honey, two tablespoon of dry oatmeal and one teaspoon of lemon juice. Massage this mixture gently onto your face for five minutes and then rinse off with water.
Honey in its purest form is suitable for all skin types, even sensitive skin. It is truly the perfect ingredient for skincare, to help you to nurture, cleanse and protect your skin.

Pumpkin Skin Benefit

BENEFITS OF PUMPKIN

Pumpkin is no longer just an ingredient you use to make pies on Thanksgiving. When you're carving a Jack O'Lantern on Halloween, you're probably not thinking about the skin care benefits of pumpkin. You may not have realized that pumpkin is rich in important essential vitamins and nutrients necessary for healthy and radiant skin.
If you prefer natural skin care products, try making your own homemade skin care treatments using fresh or canned pumpkin.

Rich in Vitamins
Pumpkin is excellent for use on all skin types, but especially if your skin is damaged from environmental conditions such as overexposure to the sun. Pumpkin is rich in vitamin A, which soothes and softens your skin, and vitamin C, an antioxidant that can help to remedy damage produced by free radicals, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Pumpkin facial masks, moisturizers and peels nourish your skin and promote the absorption of these nutrients.

Dissolves Dry Skin
Skin care products containing pumpkin such as exfoliators and moisturizers can be used on all skin types to help remove old surface skin cells and promote new cell production. Pumpkin contains natural enzymes that help to dissolve dry skin cells, according to skin care expert Sue Dolan in her book "Naturally Skinsational: Rejuvenating Skin Care Recipes." Due to the high enzyme content, pumpkin foot care products are also very effective for hydrating, soothing and softening dry, cracked hands and feet. To make your own dry heel treatment, combine 2 tbsp. of pumpkin puree with 2 tbsp. of Vaseline. Apply nightly to your feet and put cotton socks on for a deep moisturizing treatment.

Anti-Acne
If you suffer from acne, blemishes or frequent breakouts, your skin will benefit from pumpkin anti-acne products. Pumpkin contains the acne fighting vitamins E and T, more commonly known as torulitine. Pumpkin skin toners, peels and anti-acne masks promote healthier skin by fighting inflammation, reducing pore size, controlling excess oil and preventing the appearance of pimples, blackheads and blemishes. Try rubbing the fleshy side of a piece of fresh pumpkin on your face twice a day after washing for a natural blemish-fighting toner.

Strawberry Skin Benefit

Good Food, Great Skin: Luscious & Fresh Strawberry Skin Care

Delicious skin care using ingredients you can eat, this edition of Good Food, Great Skin features luscious strawberries which make a perfect summer treat. Get the dish on the benefits of strawberry skin care, get in the kitchen to make your own strawberry skin care products, and try out some amazing foodie recipes to please your tummy, too!

What’s the Dish?

The Romans prized wild strawberries for their medicinal properties and the ancient Egyptians used them to treat acne. Surprise, surprise, they were on to something! Strawberries are rich in nutrients that our skin loves to dine on, which makes strawberry skin care really add up.
With a high content of alpha-hydroxy acids, strawberries help slough off dead skin cells, increasing natural skin renewal by revealing the new youthful skin underneath.
Strawberries are rich in salicylic acid, which is commonly found in many commercial acne cleansers for a very good reason. Salicylic acid is able to penetrate deep within the pore to help exfoliate and cleanse the skin from dirt, oils, and free radicals that cause acne.
Strawberries also contain ellagic acid, which helps protect the skin from UV rays. Overexposure to UV rays leads to a decrease in collagen production which, in turn, can speed up the aging process.
Don’t forget the antioxidants that all berries are known for! Strawberries are rich in Vitamin C which plays an important role in collagen production. Collagen helps skin maintain its structure and minimizes fine lines and wrinkles. Ounce for ounce, strawberries have more Vitamin C than citrus fruits!
Did you know that strawberries can also be used for conditioning and toning due to all their power-packing nutrients? They help to tone the skin, lighten pigmentation problems, and promote smooth and supple skin to the surface.

The Health Benefits of Coconut Milk Soap

For many years, coconut milk soap has been used as a natural treatment for slight external and internal disorders. But applying coconut milk soap externally can also increase health benefits by penetrating into the skin and counteracting elements that are detrimental to the body's exterior.

Cleansing
Coconut milk is in found in facial cleansers, containing high levels of fatty acids, it helps to eliminate dirt, dead skin and other blemishing issues. The substance does not over-dry the skin and the rich milk contaminant cleans the skin gently without irritating it. Coconut milk soaps are also an ideal choice for anyone with vulnerable skin because of their relaxing properties.

Vitamin Incentive
Coconut milk soap is high in vitamin E, which is well regarded for bringing benefits to dry skin, small cuts, burns and rashes. If used on a daily basis, coconut milk soap can restore your skin to a soft and smooth condition.

MayoClinic.com, however, cautions that people who have a hypersensitivity to vitamin E should avoid using related products, such as coconut milk soap, as they may aggravate skin problems like dermatitis or eczema. Therefore, candidates considering coconut milk soap should consult a doctor before doing so.

Moisturized Skin
Coconut milk has large fat content and includes fatty acids that are beneficial for the skin. The existence of fatty acids in soap results in intense hydration. Coconut milk soap is ideal for dry skin and, besides offering a deep clean, it does not strip away the natural oils in the skin. Instead, it acts to moisturize the skin, keeping it replenished and well hydrated.

When taking a hot bath or shower, you should spend no more than 15 minutes and use lukewarm water. Extended durations of hot water to the skin increase the likelihood of dryness, therefore significantly reducing the benefits of coconut milk soap.

Yogurt Base Soap Benefit

Yogurt is as healthy on your skin as it is in your stomach. Adding it to soap will help keep skin glowing and nourished, and it can be used as easily on your face as your body. Many yogurt soaps also contain essential oils and ingredients such as oat bran or honey to enhance their skin-care properties.

Exfoliation
Yogurt contains lactic acid, which is a mild abrasive to the skin. Cleansing your face with yogurt soap will give that lactic acid the chance to penetrate the skin a bit, causing some minor irritation. When rinsed off, the dead skin and debris sloughed off by the soap will go down the drain, leaving skin refreshed. Unlike harsher exfoliants, yogurt soap can be used every day, according to experts at the Natural Remedies for Skin Care website.

Pimple Cure
Yogurt contains a high concentration of zinc, which can help dry and heal pimples, according the Quick Acne Remedy website. In addition to washing your face and body with yogurt soap, eat some organic yogurt. The zinc in particular will help fight your pimples both topically and from the inside.

Healing
Yogurt has antibacterial properties and a high fat content (yogurt soaps are made with full fat varieties to reap this benefit) that smooth and quench dry skin. If you have dry skin, use yogurt soap in the shower and lightly buff the skin with a loofah and rinse with cool water. The yogurt will help nourish the under layer of skin while you're buffing off dry skin cells. Apply moisturizer to your skin as soon as you're out of the shower or bath to lock in dampness on the skin.

Characteristic of Various Soap Making Oil and Butter

Different oils add different qualities to your soap. The combination of oils you choose will determine the hardness or softness of your soap, how well it lathers, and even how mild the finished soap will be.

Castor oil
Acts as humectant, so is moisturizing; use in combination with other oils (too much castor oil produces soft, sticky soap with sparse lather).

Canola Oil
Contributes to: stable lather, conditioning, slower trace, softer soap.  Use it to partially replace more expensive oils like olive. Canola oil is actually from a modified variety of rapeseed.

Coconut oil
Contributes to: soap hardness, fluffy lather, quicker trace. Coconut oil makes soaps lather beautifully but can be drying when it makes up an overly large portion of your soap's fats. It will make a very hard, white bar of soap that lathers well even in very hard water - even in sea water. Coconut oil is light and not greasy and is resistant to spoiling. Used in skin care formulations, coconut oil is emollient, moisturizing, conditioning and protecting to the skin.

Olive oil
Contributes to: soap hardness, stable lather, slippery feel, conditioning, moisturizing,  Olive Oil attracts external moisture to your skin, helping to keep skin soft and supple. Traditionally "Castile" soap was made using only olive oil, but the term has loosened now to include soaps that have olive oil as a major proportion of the oils in them.

Grapeseed Oil
Used in soaps as a superfatting oil, grapeseed oil is a lightweight oil that absorbs into the skin quickly without leaving a heavy greasy feeling. It has mildly astringent qualities and is said to be useful for acne and other skin complaints.

Macadamia Nut Oil
Contributes to: stable lather, conditioning, moisturizing, silky feel.  Macadamia has a long shelf life. It is easily absorbed into the skin and acts as an emollient. It is said to protect skin cells from deterioration and thus lead to better skin condition.

Palm oil
Contributes to: soap hardness, stable lather, conditioning, silky feel, quicker trace.  Palm oil makes a hard bar that cleans well and is also mild.

Rice Bran Oil
Rice bran oil is moisturizing and is a good choice for inclusion in formulations intended for mature, delicate or sensitive skin.

Soybean oil (vegetable shortening)
Makes mild soap with good lather; add coconut oil and olive oil for better lather and conditioning.

Sweet Almond Oil
Contributes to: stable lather, conditioning, moisturizing. Often used for superfatting soaps. Sweet almond oil is often used as an emollient in skin creams and balms.
Makes very mild soap with good lather; emollient; excellent superfatting oil.

Sunflower Oil
Contributes to: stable lather, conditioning, silky feel, softer soap, slower trace.  Sunflower oil contains Vitamin E, so it naturally resists going rancid.

Sesame Seed Oil
Contributes to: stable lather, conditioning, moisturizing, silky feel, softer soap. Sesame oil makes a good superfatting oil. Has a strong nutty
scent. Sesame oil has excellent longevity in massage preparations and is said to be good for psoriasis, eczema, rheumatism, and arthritis.

Avocado oil
Often used for superfatting soaps, avocado oil contains vitamins A, D, and E, which makes it healing as well as moisturizing.
Moisturizing and healing for sensitive skin; rich in vitamins A and D, proteins, and amino acids.

Jojoba
Contributes to: stable lather , conditioning, moisturizing, quicker trace. Pronounced "ho-ho-ba".  Actually mostly a liquid wax, jojoba does not lather much of itself, but rather acts to make existing lather from other oils more stable and long lasting.  Jojoba is good at conditioning skin. Because of its expense, it's usually used to superfat soap batches or in shampoo bars. It is said to be an excellent emollient for skin conditions like psoriasis or acne and has a chemical composition very close to the skin's own sebum. Jojoba oil is easily absorbed by the skin and promotes silky smooth skin. Jojoba Oil is stable and long lasting.
Very mild and soothing, especially to dry skin; contains natural antioxidants; excellent superfatting oil.

Cocoa Butter
Contributes to: soap hardness, stable lather, conditioning, moisturizing, quicker
trace. When used as a superfatting oil it acts to lay down a protective layer which holds moisture to the skin. It has a natural chocolate scent but it is also available in an unscented version. Cocoa butter contains natural antioxidants that help to prevent rancidity. It is an excellent moisturizer that melts at body temperature, leaving the skin feeling soft and silky smooth.

Shea Butter
Contributes to: soap hardness, stable lather, conditioning, silky, slippery feel, quicker trace. Shea butter is a popular superfatting agent and contains a large percentage of ingredients that do not react with the lye, thus remaining in the soap to nourish your skin. Shea butter is said to be beneficial for treating dry skin, blemishes, skin discoloration, scars and wrinkles.
